The first won the American Vintage Photography Award at the 38th Hyères International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories. The second received an honourable mention from the Design Parade jury the year before. Together, they created the exhibition Hier, j’ai dansé avec la mer, aujourd’hui aussi, presented from 16 September in one of the Marseille brand’s Parisian stores.
“It’s the story of an inhabited beach. A habitat sprinkled with sand, tracked in by all the coming and going. The people who live on the beach grew up with their parents. Their grandparents too. They leave their earthly abodes to free themselves in the water – to have fun, lose themselves, recharge themselves, nourish themselves, protect themselves, bless themselves. They reside in the sea, where lives come together and come apart, while the house seems empty. Like a gallery of everyday moments, their presence is permanent, recalled by the objects and furniture. Someone lives here.”

A collaboration that seemed destined
Last year, Souleymane Bachir Diaw walked away with the Photography Award granted by American Vintage, a partner of the Hyères International Festival of Fashion, Photography and Fashion Accessories since 2017. This September, the photographer teams up with Stéven Coëffic, who received an honourable mention from the Design Parade Hyères jury the year before. American Vintage unites them in a unique exhibition at the heart of its iconic store on rue de Charonne.
Working hand in hand, the two artists created an experience unlike any other. Photos by Souleymane Bachir Diaw will be showcased in scenography by designer Stéven Coëffic — between land and sea.
