Helmut Newton – Foam

Helmut Newton at the Foam Museum | Amsterdam

Helmut Newton – A retrospective, 17th June to 4th September 2016

On 17th June, the Foam Museum launched an exhibition of the legendary and extremely influential photographer, Helmut Newton, who was born in Berlin in 1920 and passed away in West Hollywood in 2004.

The show features 200 photographs, ranging from rare prints to monumental photos. Newton is known for his rich, quirky and complex work, which stands out amongst the photography of the late 20th century. The pieces in the exhibition are mostly vintage prints from the Helmut Newton Foundation in Berlin. Visitors can also watch Helmut by June, a film directed by Newton’s wife June in 1995.

The name Helmut Newton immediately brings to mind images of high-heeled, long-legged and scantily clad women with undisguised eroticism. Women and erotica are a central focus. Due to this, Newton’s work is often viewed as too direct and superficial, with a lack of insight into its substantive complexity and layers.
