It’s almost impossible to describe Los Angeles in a few words, and it’s just as hard to select only a few of the city’s hot spots. Yet, somehow, we managed: here’s a starter list of our must-visit places.

Where to brunch
At Great White, the perfect spot to meet up with family or friends. There are several locations throughout the city, but there’s something about the Venice one that we really love. On the menu: big salads, pancakes, burgers with fries, and toast with toppings. Looking for something that’s more traditional? You’re going to love Clark Street Diner, with its classic American breakfasts.

Clark Street Diner – 6145 Franklin Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90068, USA

Where to shop
At The Good Liver, a boutique in the Downtown Arts District focused on artisanal products. Here, you’ll find matcha in adorable little containers, as well as beautiful dishware, records, small candles and seat cushions that are made in Japan. For a colourful and comfortable wardrobe (with travel essentials galore), head to American Vintage on Abbot Kinney Boulevard. Finally, stock up on rare books at Owl Creek Books.

Where to stroll
Visit the Eames Foundation, designed by the architect couple Charles and Ray Eames. Steel, glass, wood, nature: everything comes together in coherent and subtly coloured harmony. Also, make a stop at Getty Villa, a museum that unites Greek and Roman antiquities. After perusing the galleries, be sure to wander through the gardens.

Where to sleep
At The Venice Beach House, one of the least flashy and flamboyant hotels in the city. In this family house from 1911, there’s a balmy breeze and an ocean view. With its nine rooms and suites, it’s wonderfully cosy. If you’d rather see and be seen, book a room at the Hoxton, which boasts a central location.
The Venice Beach House – 15 30th Ave, Venice, CA 90291, USA
The Hoxton – 1060 S Broadway, Los Angeles, CA 90015, USA
