American Vintage has set up shop on Calle Marques Del Puerto in Bilbao. Let’s set off for the north of Spain to discover our must-visit hotspots.
A world-famous restaurant:
Are you a real foodie? Then, you must have dinner at Azurmendi, one of the best restaurants in Europe. Are you a fan of oenology too? Then, you’ll also be delighted by their remarkable wine list.
Txakoli & Tapas:
A trip to Bilbao is also an opportunity to sample its famous tapas known as pintxos, a slice of bread with a variety of toppings: chunky pâté, cheese or chorizo, for example.
In the evening, follow the crowds and discover the different bars on Calle Ledesma, while trying pulguitas de jamon, appetizers made with Spanish ham, washed down with a nice glass of Txakoli.
If you were won over by this white wine from the Basque region, the regional vineyards also offer tastings of their best wines.
A sweet break:
For a sweet afternoon break, give in to the temptations at the famous Don Manuel candy shop, where you’ll find the famous sugary buns called bollitos.
A hotel to sleep in:
The Gran Hotel Domine is perfectly located in the most sought-after neighborhood in Bilbao. Designed by Javier Mariscal, the hotel features a terrace rooftop with a restaurant, graced with a magnificent view of the Guggenheim Museum.
Time for some art:
With its impressive exterior and amazing collections, the Guggenheim Museum, one of the foundation’s five museums in the world, remains the must-visit tourist site of the city.
For Instagrammers, the museum is the ideal spot for a great shot with the Jeff Koons colored dog in the foreground or the Louise Bourgeois’ spider.
A little history…
In the Casco Viejo, or old town, stroll through the traditional architectural heritage. Check out the Euskal Museoa, which retraces the Basque origins of the city, or the Bizkaia Frontoia fronton court where Basque pelota games are played regularly.
Time to get away:
For some beautiful hiking trails, head to the natural parks of Gorbeia and Urkiola.
