Russia makes a stopover in the Louis Vuitton world…

A key event of this winter season: the “Icons of Modern Art. The Shchukin Collection” exhibition taking place at this very moment at the Fondation Louis Vuitton in Paris.

I can already hear you asking who this Shchukin is… I’ll admit it: not only is his name hard to pronounce, but he’s also practically unknown to the general public. Sergei Shchukin was a 20th-century Russian businessman and – above all – a famous art collector.

At the time, Shchukin didn’t pay a dime for the works of art. He received them in exchange for goods or services. This allowed him to amass many pieces by prestigious painters, such as Gauguin, Cézanne, Monet, Matisse and even Picasso and Van Gogh. Today, visitors and art fans alike can admire this collection of works at the Fondation Louis Vuitton.

This iconic exhibition is comprised of 130 works of art by 40 or so artists, all pieces formerly owned by the collector. Never exhibited in France until now, this collection is on loan from the Pushkin Museum in Moscow and the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg.

“Icons of Modern Art. The Shchukin Collectionis a unique opportunity to discover paintings by the great masters of the 19th and 20th centuries, but also a chance to explore the style of Impressionist painters of the period. Due to its success, the exhibition has been extended until March 5, 2017.
