Andy Warhol created his Time Capsules from 1974 until his death in 1987.
They include a variety of objects collected by the artist and arranged in identical sized boxes.
He made up 612 capsules like this, which are now held by the Andy Warhol Museum in Pittsburgh.
Andy Warhol loved collecting all kinds of artefacts, which led to the creation of this collection, which is both something of a work of art and a set of archives. It was little known during his lifetime, but the true scale of the capsules was discovered after his death, when the initial inventory was made. According to experts at the Andy Warhol Museum, research work is likely to take several decades more before all the objects conserved in the Time Capsules have been studied, as some them contain several hundred artefacts.
It is this research work, and what it reveals about the artist’s private life, that makes the Time Capsules so interesting.
Time Capsules were frequently used in popular culture to conserve memories.
These Time Capsules are an incredible source of information on the 1960s and 1970s, which witnessed the emergence of new lifestyles and exceptional creative freedom.
The eight Time Capsules presented were chosen to retrace a key theme found in the songs written by Lou Reed and John Cale in honor of Andy Warhol for their Songs for Drella concert.
In their songs, Lou Reed and John Cale seem to speak directly to Andy Warhol, creating a feeling of intimacy and familiarity with the artist, which is particularly in tune with the experience of discovering the Time Capsules.
This retrospective exhibition is also a way of paying tribute to Lou Reed, who recently passed away.
Through songs by Lou Reed and John Cale, the exhibition takes visitors on a sentimental journey of rediscovery of Andy Warhol’s life, starting with this unique and unprecedented work, which sheds light on various aspects of his work and background. The exhibition starts with Hello It’s Me as visitors come in, and offers a farewell with Nobody But You in the final room.
